Swachh Bharat Mission helps set up 95 lakh toilets in one year

Almost 95 lakh toilets were set up in rustic India in the most recent one year since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission, Rural Development Minister Birender Singh said on Wednesday.

The quantity of toilets developed was more than the objective of 60 lakh, Singh said releasing a coffee table book on Swachh Bharat Mission.

He said states like West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra have led the pack in development of individual family unit restrooms and community toilets and these states may accomplish the objective of open-defacation free status in 2017 or 2018 well before the objective of October 2, 2019.

Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on October 2, 2014, as one of the biggest national campigns to make the nation open defacation free in five years.

The Rural Development Minister said that the government is focused on driving a pan India mass movement towards enhanced sanitation and this is just conceivable through the synergistic endeavors of the general public of India.

Evolving from the age-old mindset and attitudes towards open defacation is a critical thing in accomplishing the Swachh Bharat objectives, he included.
